What is lactose intolerance?
Lactose intolerance means that the body has difficulty breaking down lactose, which is milk sugar found in many dairy products. When a person is deficient in or does not have the enzyme lactase, which normally breaks down lactose in the small intestine, the lactose cannot be absorbed properly. Instead, it passes on to the large intestine, where bacteria there break down the lactose, which can cause gas and other symptoms.
Lactose intolerance is common and affects many people all over the world. In Sweden, approximately 10% of adults are affected. In many of us, the ability to produce lactase decreases as we get older. Fortunately, lactose intolerance is harmless, and the symptoms usually disappear when lactose is removed from the diet.
What causes lactose intolerance?
Lactose intolerance occurs when the body does not produce enough of the enzyme lactase, which is needed to break down and absorb lactose (milk sugar) from food. When lactase deficiency occurs, lactose cannot be broken down properly in the small intestine, which can cause stomach discomfort and symptoms such as gas and bloating.
Symptoms of lactose intolerance?
- Gases
- Rumbling stomach
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Bloated stomach
Is lactose intolerance common?
Yes, lactose intolerance is quite common, and the incidence varies depending on where in the world you live. People of Northern European origin often retain the ability to produce lactase, which allows them to tolerate milk sugar better. This is because we have adapted to eating dairy products over many generations.
Does lactose intolerance occur throughout the world?
Yes, lactose intolerance occurs all over the world, but how common it is depends on which part of the world you come from. In many parts of the world, people do not consume lactose-rich products, and therefore it has not been necessary for the body to be able to break down lactose after infancy. People of non-Northern European origin are more likely to have a lower ability to break down lactose with age, as the amount of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose) decreases over time.
